FAQs

Where are you located?

We are located at 5047 N. Clark St., just north of Winnemac Ave. and two blocks south of Foster Ave. (on the east side of the street under a green awning.) When you see the giant wooden spoon, you've found us!

(We are about 8 miles north of downtown Chicago and about 2 miles north of Wrigley Field in our terrific neighborhood of Andersonville.)

Which is the closest CTA stop?

The closest CTA El stop is Argyle on the Red line. Once you get off the train, cross Broadway St. and continue west (on either Argyle Ave. or Winnemac Ave.). Take a right on Clark St. (no need to cross the street) and find us under the green awning.

The Clark bus (#22) passes right by our door. Request the Winnemac stop.

Where can I park?

There are metered spaces in front of the store and we take breaks during class to keep up with feeding them. ($1.50 for one hour; the machines also take credit/debit cards.) There is free parking on the side streets (no special permits needed) and along Ashland Ave. which is just a block away.

How does your knife sharpening service work?

We sharpen knives right here in the store typically on a daily basis. If you drop your knives off by 5:00pm, they’re normally ready for pick-up by 3:00pm the following day.   Our staff will always call you to let you know when they are ready for pick-up, and should there be a problem having them ready for next day pick-up we will let you know at the time of drop-off or by phone the following day. The cost is $4.00 per knife (any length), and  for a few extra dollars we can also sharpen serrated edges and scissors, remove rust, and repair chips, nicks and bent tips!   Unfortunately, at this time we cannot sharpen ceramic knives.

How can I register for a cooking class?

Our preferred method of registration is by signing up on our website or you can contact us at 773.293.3190, or stop by our shop at 5047 N. Clark St. to sign up for one of our classes. Payment is required at the time of registration. If the class you are interested in is full, you can choose to be placed on our waiting list.

What is the difference between a 'Some Hands-On class,' 'Hands-On class,' and a 'Specialty class?'

Some Hands-On: In this type of class students help create some of the menu items during the classes that include some hands-on experience.

Hands-On: In this type of class students create the menu items, or follow the cooking skills, along with the chef.

Specialty: This type of class may be a market tour where the students go to a ethnic area of the city to learn how to buy ingredients then return to the store for a Hands-On class. Or, it could be a Some Hands-On class that includes wine paring with the menu. The class description will note when it’s a specialty class and what makes it special.
